2. FANTASTIC HIKING GUIDES

At Wildland we go to great lengths to hire the right people, train them well, support them to be their best, and to generally create a culture of excellence, professionalism and integrity. In Yosemite specifically, our guides are very knowledgeable about the incredible glacial and geologic history of the Park as well as the human and ecological components. Our team is expert with all aspects of Yosemite hiking and backpacking. We are also, to our knowledge, the only hiking and backpacking company in Yosemite that complies with all California labor laws.

4. SAFETY IS #1 PRIORITY

Yosemite, like all of Wildland Trekking’s destinations, is a national park with plenty of natural hazards. We take these dangers very seriously and go to great lengths to make sure safety is also our top priority. All guides are certified Wilderness First Responders or EMTs, and are trained on Wildland’s field and medical protocols. All trips travel with a satellite phone or GPS emergency locator (sometimes both) and extensive, company-issued first aid kits. We have a 24-hour emergency line that guides, guests and family members can call at any time to connect with a Wildland manager.

YOSEMITE HIKING TOUR OR BACKPACKING TRIP?

A question we get a lot is whether to join a Yosemite backpacking trip, or some other sort of hiking vacation like a portered hike, inn-based tour, basecamp tour, or day hike. The primary question to answer in this regard is whether you want to challenge yourself with a heavier backpack and more adventurous trip? If the answer is yes, then a backpacking trip is the way to go. If the answer is no, then a portered trip offers the ability to still experience Yosemite’s backcountry without the heavier backpack; inn-based and basecamp tours offer wonderful hiking vacation packages with lodging or tent accommodations; and day hikes are an excellent way to optimize a day or two at the Park!

WHEN SHOULD I HIKE YOSEMITE?

Yosemite is one of those unique national parks that are great 4 season destinations. Spring offers lush vegetation, thin crowds, and thundering waterfalls from snowmelt. Summer is the time of year to explore both Yosemite Valley and the high country, which by then has melted out from the winter snowpack, however it is also the busiest time of year to hike this amazing national park. Fall is magical in the Sierras with diminished crowds, wonderful temperatures, and active wildlife. Winter is a peaceful time with plenty of great hiking and snowshoeing options in Yosemite Valley and the high country.

WHY JOIN A GUIDED HIKE?

One of the world’s most popular and famous national parks, Yosemite offers a staggering number of trekking options and, along with those, also its fair share of summer crowds. A guided hiking trip or backpacking tour is an option to go with experts who know the best trails, the must-see highlights, and how to minimize the impact of crowds on your experience. Also, you can travel with only your clothes and personal belongings and allow us to take care of gear, permits, local transportation, food…etc. so you can focus 100% on enjoying your national park hike!

OTHER AMAZING CALIFORNIA TREKKING DESTINATIONS

There are many world class California hiking destinations. The first one worth mentioning is the stunning wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas outside national parks. The Eastern Sierras especially are a high country paradise with profoundly great trekking and backpacking options. These mountains are dotted with alpine lakes, beautiful creeks and streams, soaring granite peaks and more.

Another worthy mention is Death Valley National Park. Death Valley is a wonderful winter destination, as it’s a low elevation desert environment. We offer multiple tours in Death Valley, ranging from inn-based tours, camping tours and backpacking trips, all of which are some of our most popular winter trips.

Two more amazing California destinations are Joshua Tree National Park and the Lost Coast. Joshua Tree, like Death Valley, is part of the Mojave Desert and so is a fantastic winter, spring and fall destination. The Lost Coast, a wild area bordering the Pacific Ocean in Northern California, offers a spectacular coastal backpacking trip with black sand beaches, waterfalls, wildlife and dramatic scenery.
