How does Wildland Measure up to REI Adventures?

Founded in 2005 by Steve Cundy, Scott Cundy and Brad Ball, Wildland Trekking has been in business for about half the time that REI Adventures was (20 years vs. 38 years). However, for years REI Adventures worked with local companies to operate their trips, so they really had little to no knowledge of the operations side of the business. REI focused entirely on marketing the tours to their members, and relied on local companies to run the tours. It wasn’t until late 2018 that REI Adventures purchased the outdoor adventure company Arizona Outback Adventures (AOA) and began running their own programs instead of operating through 3rd party operators, otherwise known as destination management companies (DMCs).

Wildland Trekking on the other hand has always operated our own trips in the United States. With 8 field offices in Flagstaff, AZ; Mariposa, CA; St. George, UT; Olympia, WA; Driggs, ID; Estes Park, CO; Asheville, NC; and Burling, VT; Wildland has the extensive infrastructure necessary to accommodate 10,000+ guests annually on exceptionally run frontcountry and backcountry adventures.

From 2008 to 2013, Wildland Trekking operated REI Adventures’ trips in Yellowstone National Park, so we know well the style of trips REI preferred to run. Up until the pandemic, when REI stopped marketing international trips and put total emphasis on the domestic market, Wildland had outperformed REI domestically, both in terms of number of trips/guests and quality of experiences offered (based on reviews).

With 20 years of experience, more than 10,000 5-star reviews, and over 100,000 guests accommodated, Wildland is a proven brand in the adventure travel market. While we don’t have a $2 billion retail business and 30 million members like REI does, what we do have is 20 years of dedicated experience; a passion for national parks and wilderness travel; a dedicated, expert and brilliant staff of 250+ outdoor professionals; more destinations and trip styles than REI offered; and a robust international trekking program.

More Information About the CANCELLATION OF REI Adventures

REI Adventures has been a part of the national outdoor gear and apparel brand, REI, for nearly 40 years. As a much smaller division that supplemented REI’s outdoor retail business, the “Experiences” program included local classes, gear rentals, and REI Adventures (hiking tours, backpacking trips, cycling tours, kayaking trips and multi-sport adventures.)

Until 2021, REI Adventures offered trips across the globe. In 2021 they made the decision to cease all trips outside of the United States. Their goal in 2021 was to accommodate 3,000,000 people per year on various experiences and adventures across the United States.

The decision in January of 2025 to cease offering REI’s various experiences and adventures was a surprise and a shock to nearly everyone in the industry. And certainly it was a shock to the thousands of guests who had booked adventures with REI for 2025, the vast majority of whom were left with travel plans (airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals…etc.) but no tour being provided by REI. Fortunately, Wildland Trekking offers very similar trips that overlap with 74% of REI Adventures’ offerings. Whether your REI Adventures trip was in Utah, California, Colorado, Washington, Arizona or somewhere else, we’ve got you covered!
