ITINERARY

ITINERARY

Day 1

  • Hiking Mileage:  1-2 miles (1.6 – 3.2 km)
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Christchurch

On this New Zealand hiking adventure, your guide will pick you up at Christchurch International Airport. After getting settled into our first nights’ accommodation, we’ll meet together as a group for our orientation meeting. We’ll then head out to the famous Christchurch Botanical Gardens for a short walk to shake out the legs after a long flight and to get acquainted with the local flora and unique ecology of the island. From there, we’ll enjoy our first of many delicious meals together. Though you won’t experience much jet lag as there is likely not much of a time difference depending on where you are flying from, you have traveled many hours crossing the international date line. We’ll call it an early night so we are ready to enjoy our second incredible hike tomorrow morning.

Day 2

  • Hiking Mileage: 5.6 miles (9 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 1174 feet (358 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 1174 feet (358 m)
  • Drive: 3 hours
  • Accommodation: Hotel in Hokitika

After a good night’s sleep and a breakfast to fuel your day, we’ll load the van and begin our journey through the stunning Southern Alps, sampling three iconic hikes. The Southern Alps are the fastest growing mountain range in the world (rising about 1 cm per year!) and the hallmark of the South Island landscape. Our first hike is the Kura Tawhiti (or Castle Hill) loop trail. We’ll get to walk amongst the impressive karst landscape that was a feature in the famous Lord of the Rings movies. The geology of this area is other-worldly. Our second hike takes us to the Devil’s Punchbowl located in Arthur’s Pass. hike through a lush beech forest to view this incredible 430 ft waterfall. Next, we’ll begin the Otira Valley Walk, at the summit of Arthur’s Pass.

Our itinerary takes us into Hokitika, on the west coast of the South Island. This area is well known for its heritage of gold mining history, shipwrecks, and pounamu stone hunting. One can find many, unique New Zealand treasures here in Hokitika. Before dinner you’ll have time to explore town and get a taste of more to come in this New Zealand adventure. After dinner, we’ll search for glow worms!

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Punakaiki

The focus of today’s hike is the splendid Lake Kaniere. After breakfast the trail will take us along the photogenic bays of the lake. The route will afford us plenty of options for swimming holes. Eventually we’ll come upon a loop through the Hokitika gorge. While on the hike we’ll see plenty of examples of Rimu and Podocarp forests. Our afternoon drive will take the scenic route down The Great Coast Road to Punakaiki. Here we’ll enter the Paparoa National Park where our beach front lodgings will be waiting for us replete with self-contained cottages, hotel rooms, and an in-house restaurant.

We’ll also catch a glimpse of blowholes and surge pools. The Truman track is a shorter walk through pristine subtropical forest that will bring us to a magnificent coastline with cliffs, caverns, a waterfall, and blowholes.

If weather cooperates, a bonfire awaits our tired muscles as we watch the sunset over the Tasman Sea.  As the dusk gathers, we’ll head back to our cozy accommodations for the evening.

On this hike we’ll have lunch beneath the Ballroom overhang, which is one of the South Island’s crown jewels. During this hike we’ll have ample opportunity to practice our river crossing skills with aid from our fantastic guides. If the water levels are too high, we’ll enjoy a beautiful coastal hike and visit the fantastic residents of the Tauranga Bay seal colony. After lunch our hike continues as it follows the river out of a limestone canyon to the coast.  Upon arriving at the mouth of the Potikohua and Fox rivers we’ll head inland toward the small alpine village of St. Arnaud, tucked away in the heart of the Southern Alps.

Along the hike, your guide will show you how to responsibly and respectfully harvest harakeke (New Zealand flax used for weaving) and instruct you how to weave a mat or hat!

  • Elevation Gain: 1410 feet (430 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 1575 feet (480 m)

With spectacular views of the Tennyson Inlet, we’ll then descend and walk along the Ngwhatakhiti Bay. Before lunch, you may enjoy a swim of the Marlborough Sound. The hike concludes with views of the sea through the lush coastal forest full of giant rimu, nikau, beech, and fern trees. At the end of the trail, our private vehicle awaits to whisk us to Maruia Springs.

Tonight, we’ll be staying at a geothermal retreat nestled in the bush. Here we’ll be able to soak our muscles before enjoying the local cuisine at this in-house restaurant. This will be an ideal place to treat ourselves for the next two nights.

In the afternoon, we’ll have the opportunity to treat ourselves at our hot springs accommodations: hot spring soaks, sauna infusions, and meditation and yoga classes are all included in our stay.

Day 10

  • Drive: 2.5 hours

We’ll start our final morning with a soak in the geothermal waters followed by a leisurely and tasty breakfast.  As we make our way back South to Christchurch, we’ll get to reminisce over the incredible time we’ve had on our New Zealand hiking adventure. Guides

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Weather In New Zealand

New Zealand’s climate is rich and diverse, varying from warm subtropical in the north to cool temperate climates in the south. The two islands have 12 distinct climate zones. New Zealand also experiences severe alpine conditions in the Southern Alps. The West Coast of the South Island is the wettest area whereas 60 miles east of the mountains is the driest area.

The coldest month of the year is July (~35°F/1°C average) and the warmest is usually January/February (~73°F/23°C average). Be prepared for a range of weather, temperature, and precipitation.

Such a treat to experience NZ through local's eyes

What an incredible trip! Our guides Ed and Summar were fantastic - both extremely knowledgable and passionate about the area. It was such a treat to experience NZ through local's eyes. Every day of our trip offered so much variety... it was clear that the itinerary was thoughtfully curated to offer the best 10 day experience possible. Our accommodations were lovely and unique, and the food was amazing! I hope Wildland continues to offer more tours in New Zealand. There is so much to experience in this beautiful country!

This was my 2nd trip with Wildland Trekking and in both cases the guides were the main reason for choosing this company. Their knowledge, experience and passion for the outdoors, as well as their ability to share it others was extraordinary.
