Iceland’s East Fjords Hut to Hut Trek
Hut to Hut Trekking Tours
8 Days, 7 Nights 50+MI / 80+KMTrip Highlights
This is a one-of-a-kind, off-the-beaten-path, remote Icelandic hiking adventure! Our hut-to-hut trek around Iceland’s East Fjords is a truly special hike. Beginning in Reykjavík, we get to experience the charming Icelandic capital city and then take off on a domestic flight to the secluded East Fjords. While at our guesthouse the night before our trekking begins, enjoy soaking in a hot tub which sits right at the shore of the Greenland Sea. If we’re lucky (and it is before mid-August), we can catch a glimpse of puffins as we approach the Hafnarhólmi puffin cliffs. Then, as we set off on our 4-night hut trek, we’ll enjoy colorful peaks, majestic cliffs and giant boulders, mystical ponds, cascading creeks, the white mountains of Hvítserkur, and the tranquility of the East Fjords. Your guides are known for their vast knowledge of all-things Iceland, and also their impressive culinary skills in the backcountry, so come hungry for knowledge, adventure, and local cuisine!

Is This Trip Right For me?
This trip has 6 days of consecutive hiking, with mileage ranging from 8-10 miles a day, but the elevation gain/loss is not extreme. Hiking in Iceland is generally at low elevations – often near or just above sea level – which makes the hiking more moderate than many higher elevation destinations.
Trip Itinerary
Please Note: We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however occasionally trips are subject to itinerary changes based on a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to: lodging/campground availability, extreme weather, political or bureaucratic obstacles, earthquakes, fires, flooding and more. Normal terms and conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes.
Day 1
Accommodation: Hotel in Reykjavík
Halló and velkominn! Hello and welcome to Iceland! Upon your arrival, your shuttle bus will be waiting to take you to Reykjavík (a quick 45 min transfer in a comfortable, wi-fi enabled bus). After you check into our first night’s hotel, located in the heart of Reykjavík, you are free to explore the capital city on your own. We’ll meet in the evening for our group orientation at 5:00 PM. After, your guide will provide recommendations to some of their favorite dinner options and you’re welcome to go out on your own or you may decide to go out together as a group.
Please Note: If your flight lands in the morning, your hotel room will not be ready for you to check in. However, if you’d like, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel and start your city exploration.
Day 2
Hiking Distance: 8 mi./13 km
Elevation Gain: 1450 ft./442 m.
Elevation Loss: 2150 ft./655 m.
Trekking Duration: 6 hours
Accommodation: Guesthouse in Bakkagerði
The adventure begins! This morning, we will catch an early flight from Reykjavík’s domestic airport to the town of Egilsstaðir, in the Northeast of the country. Here you can enjoy the town and its geothermal swimming pool, while your guide gathers the final supplies needed for the trek. After, we will take a 45-minute drive and start our first hike to Stórurð: a surreal chaos of giant boulders and turquoise ponds formed at the end of the last ice age, surrounded by the impressive natural stronghold of Dýrfjöll mountain range. After a hike in green valleys and meadows, we’ll continue past the coastal village of Bakkagerði and check out Hafnarhólmi harbor where we can enjoy the sight of a puffin colony nesting on top of the cliffs until mid-August. Heading back to Bakkagerði, we’ll enjoy a peaceful evening with a view in our cozy accommodation. This evening, you may choose to enjoy soaking in hot tubs beside the sea, enjoy some local beer from a micro-brewery or walk around this charming little town.
Day 3
Hiking Distance: 8 – 11 mi./13-18 km.
Elevation Gain: 3000 ft./914 m.
Elevation Loss: 3000 ft./914 m.
Trekking Duration: 6-8 hours
Accommodation: Hut in Breiðavík
After breakfast, we’ll head out of town past Álfaborg, a rocky outcrop known as the City of the Elves where Queen Borghildur is believed to reside according to the local folklore. Leaving the plains and meadows behind, our ascent takes us over a mountain pass overlooking the bay of Brúnavík and its light-colored beach. Carrying on, we’ll make our way around Súlutindur mountain peak and descend towards Breiðavík mountain hut which will become our base for the next two nights.
Day 4
Hiking Distance: 8 – 11 mi. (13 -18 km.)
Elevation Gain: 2500 ft./762 m.
Elevation Loss: 2500 ft./762 m.
Trekking Duration: 6-8 hours
Accommodation: Hut in Breiðavík
This morning greets us full of options to enjoy in this amazing area. We won’t need full packs on today as we’ll be coming back to the same cozy hut tonight. One of our options allows us to explore an amazing, colorful, rhyolitic mountain range and panoramic views on the fjords. Alternatively, today can offer an opportunity to wander around the coast, relax and enjoy the view on the spectacular surroundings of the bay of Breiðavík. After the day, we’ll enjoy yet another delightful meal of Icelandic cuisine prepared by your guide.
Day 5
Hiking Distance: 8 mi (13 km)
Elevation Gain: 2500 ft./762 m.
Elevation Loss: 2000 ft/610 m.
Trekking Duration: 6-7 hours
Accommodation: Hut in Húsavík
Today, we walk further inland and head towards a cluster of light-colored mountains, among which the majestic Hvítserkur stands out, lacerated by dark-colored magmatic intrusions. The ascent has a more alpine character, with scree slopes, cascading streams, and remaining snow patches from the previous winter. In the next fjord, another mountainous stronghold of impressive cliffs dominates the bay of Húsavík where our next hut is located.
Day 6
Hiking Distance: 8-10 mi (13 – 16 km)
Elevation Gain: 2000 ft./610 m.
Elevation Loss: 2400 ft./731 m.

Accommodation: Hut in Loðmundarfjörður
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll hike up the Nesháls mountain pass and are rewarded on a clear day with an impressive view on the junction between the fjords of Loðmundarfjörður and Seyðisfjörður. Weather permitting, we might further explore the area and check out a nearby summit with yet another jaw-dropping vista. Along our way, we follow an old mountain road still occasionally used by reindeer hunters – a reminder to keep our eyes open for some of the only wildlife that Iceland has to offer in terms of land mammals. Ultimately, we reach Klýppstaðir mountain hut and enjoy our last dinner and night in the mountains before heading towards inhabited lands.
Day 7
Hiking Distance: 8 mi. (13 km)
Elevation Gain: 2100 ft./640 m.
Elevation Loss: 2100 ft./640 m.
Trekking Duration: 5 hours
Accommodation: Hotel in Reykjavík
Hiking along formerly cultivated fields and deserted farms, one can only imagine how life must have been in this part of the world. Walking in the steps of the Icelanders, we follow a traditional route connecting Loðmundarfjörður and Seyðisfjörður, with a long but gradual ascent towards the mountain pass of Krakaskarð where the rocky ridges suddenly reveal a fjord far down, stretching and weaving between the majestic mountains. After our descent, we get a ride to a coastal town, which was named after the fjord, and make a quick stop to see its most iconic landmarks. Then we will carry on towards Egilsstaðir, where we take a 1-hour domestic flight back to Reykjavík. Dinner is on your own this evening, your guide will make suggestions.
Day 8
Today is the final day of the Wildland Trekking’s East Fjords Trek. We will ensure you get on the proper airport (FlyBus) shuttle for departure to Keflavik International Airport. Thanks for choosing Wildland Trekking!
