Is This Trip Right For me?
This trip follows established trails with moderate daily hiking distances, but does have significant elevation gains and losses. Early season trips may have snow on the trails.
Trip Itinerary
Please Note: We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Normal terms and conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes.
Day 1
Shuttle: 2.25 hours
Hiking Distance: 5.6 miles
Elevation Gain: 2707 feet
Elevation Loss: 909 feet
The day begins with a pickup from your Olympia Hotel as we venture away from the city toward the majestic Mt. Rainier. Upon arriving at the trailhead in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, we’ll unload quickly and make sure we’re well-fed before hitting the trail. The hike starts with a 484-foot descent to a glacier-fed river crossing, followed by an ascent into the heart of the Goat Rocks. Our first campsite will be at a high alpine lake nestled just below the ridgeline leading to Coal Creek Mountain.
Day 2
Hiking Distance: 7.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,415 feet
Elevation Loss: 2,463 feet
After a hearty breakfast we’ll start our day with a climb up to the ridge where we will ascend above the treeline to walk along the alpine ridge where we’ll reach an old Lost Lake Lookout site. With the panoramic views, on a clear day, we’ll enjoy the sights of Mt Rainier, Mt Adams, and Mt St. Helens! Once we’ve taken in our fill, we’ll descend down to yet another alpine lake before beginning a gradual climb that opens up into an expansive, high-altitude area adorned with wildflowers and sweeping views of the majestic Goat Rocks Wilderness, including stunning snowfields and dramatic waterfalls. Continuing past Chimney Rock, we’ll follow the ridge for breathtaking vistas of Bear Creek Mountain, Old Snowy, and Johnson Peak. The descent that follows is swift and rocky, so treading carefully, we’ll make our way to Packwood Saddle, a serene forested junction where we’ll set up camp for the night!
Day 3
Hiking Distance: 5.9 miles
Elevation Gain: 173 feet
Elevation Loss: 3,052 feet
This morning we awaken to the vibrancy of an the old-growth forest. Now an expert at packing up your tent and backpack, you are free to find solitude in the surrounding forest or chat with the other guests while awaiting another scrumptious breakfast. The trail descends through dense forest as we pass by a jaw dropping old landslide and navigate our way over and through a short but steep and rugged section of trail. We will continue our decent through the forest, weaving over a glacier fed creek as it leads us to the valley floor below where we will hike along a river until we reach a large lake where we will make camp. This dense forest welcomes us with an assortment of ferns, salmonberries, flowering currants, and vanilla-leaves. After making camp, we will have the opportunity to go for a swim or wade in the clear crisp mountain lake. After a final backcountry dinner, when we choose to cozy into our warm sleeping bags, the gentle sound of the distant river and waves rolling on the shore will lull us off to sleep.
Day 4
Hiking Distance: 4.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 620 feet
Elevation Loss: 694 feet
Shuttle: 2 hours
On our final day in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, we will continue walking around the lake where there will be an old ranger station and historic guard station to explore. The trail leading back to the trailhead will provide rich smells of fir and cedar along with protection from the elements. The trees will engulf us in a lush, green tunnel as we travel up then down a gentle gradient to the Wildland vehicle awaiting our arrival. After a final group lunch, we will enjoy a scenic drive past Mt Rainier and drop you off in Olympia at your hotel!

I just competed the 4 day trek with Lindsey and 5 other adventurers. The trip was pretty much as advertised with some slightly longer miles on my watch each day (no complaints here). The views were amazing never losing site of Mt. Rainier. The variety of landscape/terrain as we progressed in our journey included blueberry patches, colorful meadows, above tree line traversing, lots of single tracks, river beds, a variety of plants, berries and shrooms, dense forrest, and let’s not forget the scree :-). The lakes were clear, colorful and inviting. Our group bravely took the plunge on our last night. A bit chilly to start, but you cannot pass up an opportunity to swim in an alpine lake with Rainier reflecting proudly upon it. I would agree with WLT that the overall trek was moderate, but as noted in the itinerary be prepared for a good challenge on day 2. I would rate the solitude level a solid 5. We only saw 2 other adventurers for a brief moment on day 2 (perhaps it was due to the time of year and/or weekday trekking). Unfortunately, we did not see any big game wildlife. I was hoping to see goats or maybe a Sasquatch (I want to believe so a tree knock or howl would have sufficed). Although, a four knock on a log near a companions tent on our last night and a potential UFO captured in another companions pic on the same night may make me a believer yet. Are they related?? Haha. The lack of wildlife (real or TBD) definitely didn’t take anything away from how spectacular the trip was. Lindsey was a fantastic guide. She was very experienced, knowledgeable and made sure everyone was comfortable, safe, and that my trip goals were achieved. She made amazing meals and brought the best desserts. No one walked away wanting or needing more. Last but not least…the people. This was my third trip this year with WLT and I always travel alone. It’s only natural to wonder, or maybe even worry, about who you will meet. EVERYONE I have met regardless of experience (or any other demographic you want to add) has been nothing less than stellar. This group was no exception. What started out as “we are the two best friends that anyone could have” ended with seven. The GRW is a hidden gem and if you are reading this, please keep it that way. There aren’t many remaining :-). Do good. Be good.

This trip was fantastic! It was a re-route from an initial trip due to a wildfire but I’m so happy it ended up being this trip. If you are looking to see all of what Washington can offer, this is it. Forest, mountains, alpine lakes…it was absolutely stunning. Our guide Zeke was phenomenal and demonstrated such great knowledge and mastery of his skill. He is a seriously impressive guide and chef. He made it a trip of a lifetime. This trip can cannot be over looked by the more well known areas of Washington!! Wildlank Treking did so great, I got home and immediately started to look at what trip I want to take next.
