Day 1
- Travel Time: 2 hours
- Accommodation: Hotel in Shkoder, Albania
Mirë se vini! Welcome to Albania! If you’ve chosen to arrive early and explore Tirana, we’ll meet at 2:00 PM in the city center. Otherwise, we’ll rendezvous at 3:00 PM at Tirana International Airport for those arriving on Day 1.
From either meeting point, we’ll begin our journey north with a private shuttle transfer (2 hours, included) to Shkodra—one of Albania’s oldest and most culturally rich cities. Nestled between dramatic mountain ranges and overlooking Lake Shkodra, the largest lake in the Balkans, this vibrant city serves as the gateway to the Accursed Mountains. After settling into your accommodation, we’ll gather for a trip orientation meeting to review the itinerary, logistics, and answer any questions. The evening wraps up with a welcome dinner, offering a chance to connect with your guide and fellow travelers as we prepare for the adventure ahead.

This panoramic peak offers 360° views of the surrounding Accursed Mountains, a stunning introduction to the rugged beauty of northern Albania. Descending through summer meadows and tranquil beech forests, we arrive in Vermosh, Albania’s northernmost village, just steps from the Montenegro border. A final steep climb brings us to the twin peaks of Popadija and Taljanka (6,750 ft./2,057 m.), offering one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in the Western Balkans. From this vantage point, we gaze into the Grebaja Valley, a breathtaking display of jagged, dolomite-like formations that define the Western Alps.
Crossing into Montenegro, we continue along a ridge trail, passing multiple scenic viewpoints with sheer rock faces and plunging valleys. The descent leads us back into a magical beech forest, ending at a local beer garden nestled at the base of the valley—perfect for a refreshing break. A final 30-minute transfer brings us to our guesthouse in Vusanje, a peaceful hamlet known for its pastoral traditions, sunset mountain views, and rich biodiversity. The trail winds through a mountain-framed valley, passing historic border stones and ruined bunkers that once marked the edge of former Yugoslavia. As we ascend, the dramatic landscape unfolds around Mt. Arapi, often called the Matterhorn of Albania, home to the tallest north face in the Balkans. Following an ancient caravan route, we descend in zigzags along the shoulder of towering limestone walls into the Thethi Valley, one of Albania’s most iconic national parks and a premier mountain destination. A short 15-minute transfer brings us to a comfortable mountain inn, where we’ll spend the next two consecutive nights. Nestled in the heart of the Alps, Theth offers a perfect base for exploring Albania’s wild beauty, with sunset views, rich biodiversity, and a deep connection to traditional mountain life.

After reaching the falls, we continue on foot to Nderlysa, where we’ll enjoy a traditional lunch at a local guesthouse. In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to extend your hike to the mesmerizing Blue Eye karst spring, a natural wonder fed by glacial waters. Here, you can swim in crystal-clear ponds formed by ancient glacial mills or simply relax at the guesthouse and soak in the serene surroundings.
Later in the day, a 45-minute transfer returns us to our mountain inn in Theth, where we’ll spend a second night surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the Albanian Alps.

After breakfast, a short 5-10 minute private transfer brings us to the trailhead of the Valbona Pass, Albania’s most iconic and well-traveled hiking route. This scenic trail links the country’s two premier national parks—Theth and Valbona—and offers a spectacular alternative to the long drive around the mountains, which takes nearly as long as the hike itself.
The trail is alive with fellow hikers and pack horses transporting luggage between valleys, adding to the vibrant mountain atmosphere. We ascend through a 300-year-old beech forest, which provides welcome shade as we climb toward the pass. Near the highest point of the trail— 5,890 ft. (1,795 m.), — we’ll pause for a picnic lunch and soak in sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. Along the way, we may stop at rustic trailside cafés, perfect for a refreshing drink and a moment of rest. As we gain elevation, we’re treated to a striking view of Mt. Jezerca (8,839 ft./2,694 m.), the southernmost giant of the Dinaric Alps, which stretch all the way to Mt. Triglav in Slovenia. If local shepherds are present, we may stop at their mountain hut for a refreshing drink and a glimpse into traditional highland life.
We then cross the Persllopit Pass (6,690 ft./2,039 m.), re-entering Montenegro. The descent follows karstic limestone steps, winding back into Vusanje, the tranquil village where we stayed three nights ago.

Today begins with a longer private transfer through the charming town of Plav and into the evergreen valley of Babino Polje, near the border with Kosovo. Our hike starts high in the forested hills, where we follow a trail through dense evergreens, pausing at the serene Lake Hrid—a place steeped in local legends and mountain folklore. As we ascend, the landscape opens into alpine tundra, leading us along a ridgeline to Mt. Trekufiri at 7,763 ft./2,366 m.—a remarkable summit where Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro meet. From this unique vantage point, we enjoy panoramic views across all three countries and settle in for a scenic picnic lunch.

Weather permitting, we’ll aim to summit Mt. Gjeravica (8,714 ft/2,656 m.)—Kosovo’s highest peak. The ascent is steep and partially exposed, but rewards us with sweeping views deep into Kosovo’s mountainous interior. The final climb is optional and can be skipped for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. Descending through blueberry-covered meadows and alongside alpine creeks, we reach a summer pasture, where our private transfer awaits to take us to the vibrant city of Gjakova.

All accommodations include private (en suite) bathrooms and provide everything you need to rest comfortably after a day on the trail—hot showers, clean linens, and cozy common areas.
One of the highlights of our Balkan trips is experiencing the warm hospitality of Southeast European Mountain guesthouses. These family-run accommodations offer an authentic glimpse into local culture—complete with home-cooked meals and genuine connection with your hosts.
There are some unique elements to the accommodations that are important for guests to understand:
Bed configurations: Twin beds are standard throughout the region. Queen and king beds are not available. In many guesthouses, two twin mattresses share a single bed frame with separate bedding, meaning you and your roommate will be closer together than typical US hotel arrangements.
Rustic charm: These village guesthouses prioritize comfort and hospitality over luxury. Expect simpler furnishings, family-style dining, and the authentic character of traditional mountain homes.

What sort of meals should I expect?
Hiking through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro means not only experiencing stunning landscapes but also a rich culinary experience. In small mountain villages, meals are family-style affairs featuring traditional recipes, local ingredients, and centuries-old shepherd cuisine. This is hearty, honest food meant to fuel long days in the mountains—and it’s often a trip highlight
Breakfasts: Expect a hearty spread to start your day: petulla (traditional fried dough served sweet with honey and fruit preserves or savory with cheese), eggs prepared various ways, fresh vegetables, local cheese, and sometimes pastries made with filo dough. A few hosts offer contemporary options like pancakes or crepes.
Lunches: Your guides prepare scenic picnic spreads to enjoy on the trail: fresh bread, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, local cheeses, boiled eggs, and cured meats. Fresh fruit appears occasionally, as the short alpine growing season limits availability.
Dinners: Dinners are the highlight of the day, served family-style with multiple courses. Start with fresh salads featuring seasonal vegetables, local cheese, and olives. Next comes a hearty soup or stew—often bean-based with potatoes or rice—followed by the main course of grilled or slow-cooked chicken, beef, goat, or lamb. Fresh bread accompanies every meal.
Snacks: Our team provides local trail snacks including chocolate, nuts, dried fruit, and cookies. However, common US brands and items like protein bars, energy gels, and beef jerky are not readily available in these remote areas. We recommend bringing your favorite trail snacks from home.
Dietary Restrictions: We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher diets, and food allergies whenever possible. However, in these rural, off-the-beaten-path villages, sourcing specialty ingredients or substitutes can be challenging or impossible. Some dietary requests may require an additional fee or may not be fully accommodable. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs before booking.
Is there a minimum age for this trip?
Age restrictions on this trip are as follows: Hikers must be 12 years or older to join scheduled (mixed groups) or private trips
